Microsoft is extending free security updates for Windows 10 users for one additional year

For those who are still using Windows 10 and would like to benefit from an additional year of security updates, you can do so now in the Windows Update window by clicking on the “Enroll now” link.

However, you must have Windows 10 version 22H2 with the latest updates in order to enroll.

How to install the latests Windows Updates?

    1. Click on Start > Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update > Check for updates.
    2. If any updates are available for you, click on Download & install. Your device will download and install the updates. If prompted to do so, restart your device to apply the updates.

How to verify your Windows version?

    1. Press the Windows key + R on your keyboard.
    2. Type winver and press Enter.
    3. A dialog box will appear showing your current Windows version and OS Build. It should say “Windows 10, Version 22H2”.

If all the Windows Updates were done and it still doesn’t say Version 22H2, the Update Assistant may help you update to that version of Windows 10.

If you have version 22H2 with the latest updates and still cannot enroll for the extended security updates, you can force this option to be enabled by adding the appropriate entries to the Windows Registry.

You can use this Registration Entries (.reg) file to apply the appropriate changes to the Windows Registry.

After that change to the Windows Registry you should see the option in Windows Update.

Please note that you must be logged in with your Microsoft account for this method to work, so if you are logged in with a local account and do not want to switch to a Microsoft account, you can do so using this Windows PowerShell script:

    1. Download the ConsumerESU ZIP file containing the script.
    2. Extract all the files from the ZIP file.
    3. Run Consumer_ESU_Enrollment_run.cmd as administrator.

How can I verify that I am indeed enrolled for extended security updates?

You should see “Your PC is enrolled to get Extended Security Updates.” in the upper right corner of the Windows Update window.
